I’ve just returned from my first Association for Interdisciplinary Studies (AIS) conference. It was amazing! The support that colleagues provided, the time that was generously given and the collegiate atmosphere were all brilliant! I can certainly recommend attending. The next conference will be in Amsterdam, easier for those of us in the UK and Europe.
Often, as interdisciplinary staff on campuses, we can feel alone or outside the normal structures due to the nature of our work. These events remind us that there are others experiencing the same issues, trying to solve the same problems, but also absolutely committed to the goal of educating and inspiring students to love learning and to see the tremendous variation in our world.
If you haven’t already done so, go to the AIS website (https://oakland.edu/ais/) and look through the tremendous resources that are available. Also, take a look at https://sites.google.com/a/ualberta.ca/rick-szostak/research/about-interdisciplinarity.
